Dakota doubles up, plus all the prep football recaps

If it wasn't one, it was the other.

Macomb Dakota seniors Rodney Hush and Kyle Demaster were human highlight reels against Clinton Township Chippewa Valley.

They impacted the game from the opening play, kept the Big Reds on their toes and gave the massive crowd plenty to gush over in Dakota's 39-0 win Friday.

"Coach comes up to me every game and says I've got to step up. Me and Demaster -- Demaster's a heck of a player," Hush said. "The kid makes plays like no other."

First it was Demaster, who turned a five-yard hitch into a 60-yard touchdown on the Cougars' (5-0) first play of the game.

Then it was Hush, who scored on a 51-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Mitch Lovett late in the first half.

Demaster finished with two catches for 94 yards, while Hush had four catches for 118 yards, a touchdown, an interception and a huge kickoff return to start the second half.

"They're real good athletes and they're dangerous, and they're playmakers and they've been to the state championship," Chippewa Valley coach Mike Carr said, "and in big games they rise to the front."

Said Dakota coach Mike Giannone: "They have it. Whatever it takes, they bring it. If it's knocking down a pass, if it's intercepting something, if it's running back a kickoff, they've done it all for us. And they're seasoned guys. They've been through some big games and they thrive for these big games."

You could also throw Lovett, a first year quarterback, into that conversation. Lovett, who replaced James Stallons (Wisconsin), completed 9 of 13 passes for 231 yards and four touchdowns.

The Big Reds (3-2), on the other hand, were without starting quarterback Tyler Alwardt in the second half. Alwardt had been battling a leg injury throughout the week and clearly wasn't himself. He only completed 2 of 11 passes for 13 yards and had minus-17 yards rushing.

"He's such a tough kid and he wanted to play so bad," Carr said. "We're a different team without him."
