UW football: Cal Poly on 2008 schedule, report says
The University of Wisconsin football team has apparently filled out its 2008 schedule with an opponent that's unlikely to excite UW fans.
Cal Poly, a Football Championship Subdivision team, has tentatively scheduled a game at Camp Randall Stadium for Nov. 22, the San Luis Obispo Tribune reported. The newspaper cited multiple sources close to the program.
A phone message left with a UW spokesman, seeking comment, was not immediately returned.
Cal Poly is 2-5 against Football Bowl Subdivision teams, but this would be its first game against a team from a Bowl Championship Series conference.
The Mustangs lost to San Jose State 17-7 and defeated San Diego State 16-14 in their last two games against Bowl Subdivision opponents.
The Badgers had an opening on their schedule after getting out of a contract to play Virginia Tech on Sept. 20. UW coach Bret Bielema was worried about a tough first four games in Big Ten Conference play, beginning the following week at Michigan. The Badgers are then home against Ohio State and Penn State, before traveling to Iowa.
It is likely Bielema wanted to keep the Sept. 20 date open, to create an off week before the start of conference play. That would have severely limited the Badgers' choices for quality opponents, for Nov. 22, which is the week after they finish Big Ten play.
