St. Louis Rams consider UWSP for training site
Move over Jacksonville Jaguars. Another National Football League team might be coming to town.
Reports have been confirmed that the St. Louis Rams are considering moving their training camp to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Also under consideration reportedly are UW-Whitewater and Macomb, Ill.
Upon learning of the reports Pointers athletic director Frank O’Brien contacted Rams officials to express interest in luring St. Louis to the university for training camp.
“Obviously, we would be interested,” said O’Brien. “I did call their vice president of football operations and left a message. I have not heard back. Nobody (from the Rams) has contacted us.”
In addition to the Green Bay Packers, the only other team to hold training camp in Wisconsin are the Kansas City Chiefs, who call UW-River Falls home in the summer.
The expansion Jaguars held their inaugural training at UW-Stevens Point during the summer of 1995. Jacksonville left after one year for a training facility in Florida, citing the need to be closer to its fan base.
Calls to the Rams front office by the Journal went unreturned.
